William A. Werner was born in Mansfield, Ohio on October 28, 1930. He received a bachelor's degree in architecture in 1952 and a master's degree in architecture in 1957, both from the University of Michigan. He became a University of Michigan faculty member as an instructor in 1956. He was promoted to assistant professor in 1961, associate professor in 1966, and professor in 1973.
